Cameron Rogers sprinted to the win at Gent Wevelgem U23 to claim his second victory of the year.
The 186.2km loop starting and finishing in Ypres saw Nicolas Milesi get into a 10-man break, before accelerating up the Kemmelberg ascent. He briefly went clear with Halvor Dolven (Lotto - Group Wanty), before coming back together.
A chasing group of 11 bridged over, including Rogers, to form a larger front group with 13km to go. Milesi attacked again and managed to force a small gap, but was caught in the closing stages, leaving it all down to a sprint finish.
Rogers accelerated out of the final corner and displayed a powerful sprint, lunging for the line to see the Australian take the victory in a very close finish.
Speaking afterwards, Rogers said:
“It was full gas! With about 900m to go was when I knew I had to go for the final corner. Came in with a lot of speed and I kind of got blocked on the corner but fortunately I made it through, got onto the cobbles and I just went full gas. I don’t even really remember what was going through my head to be honest.
“I thought Nicolas was going to win. He’s such a strong time triallist and he did such a good job. They just got him back near the end and I knew I just had to go then.”
