Watson sprints to victory in Vienna

Sam Watson sprinted to an emphatic victory on the final stage of the Tour of Austria.

The Brit latched on to a strong leadout from his Netcompany INEOS teammates on the streets of the Austrian capital, before opening up and besting Vincenzo Albanese (EF Education - EasyPost) and Patrick Konrad (Lidl-Trek) at the line.

Despite only starting the day with four riders, the team were able to deliver Watson and consolidate their GC positions, with Carlos Rodriguez and AJ August sealing fourth and sixth places respectively. 

The team ensured they also claimed the Team GC award after five hard-fought stages, while August also wrapped up the best young rider jersey.

After the stage Watson said: "It was tricky as we had only four guys but they did such a good job. I had an easy ride until I sprinted.

"It’s been a tricky year for me. I worked a lot towards the Tour and I wanted to put all that good work to use. At the start of the race I really wanted at least a stage victory and I’m super happy to pull that off."
