Filippo Ganna sprinted to third after a gruelling day in the break in difficult conditions on the final stage of Tour of Britain, which was won by Nils Pollitt (UAE Team Emirates)
Ganna was part of a small lead group that escaped the bunch after Netcompany INEOS had instigated an attack in the crosswinds, but in the end found himself outnumbered.
Five UAE Team Emirates riders were able to use their numerical advantage, rolling attacks in the final kilometres with Pollitt going clear to seal the victory, with Ganna finishing third.
The third place helped Ganna to earn the red jersey for best sprinter, edging Lewis Askey (NSN Cycling Team) into second.
Earlier, Netcompany INEOS had used the windy and rainy conditions to their advantage to split the peloton in crosswinds atop Duddy Bank.
Ganna, Connor Swift, Artem Shmidt and Kim Heiduk powered into the crosswinds to ensure a split in the bunch, which proved decisive.
UAE Team Emirates also made the split and were able to further divide the group, with Connor Swift and Ganna present.
Connor Swift then helped Ganna position onto the next climb, Harden's Hill, before dropping back, as the front group pushed on before Pollitt attacked and took the stage win as Ganna fought to third in the chase group.
