Egan Bernal and Thymen Arensman remain well placed on the Giro d'Italia general classification following a treacherous stage five, which saw the breakaway contest the stage win.

The Netcompany INEOS duo now site ninth and 10th overall on a day where the race lead changed hands in the pouring rain.

Bernal and Arensman were well protected by their teammates across the 203-kilometre test, finishing safely in the peloton in Potenza, seven minutes back on the stage winner.

Up ahead it was Igor Arrieta (UAE Emirates - XRG) who prevailed in a battle for stage honours, overhauling Afonso Eulalio (Bahrain Victorious) in the final metres. Eulalio would however pull on the maglia rosa, with a new lead of 2:51.

After a tough and fast start to the stage it was Ben Turner who continued his momentum, representing the team in the 12-man break, which ultimately split apart on the final climb.
