Onley clinches Best Young Rider jersey at La Vuelta

Oscar Onley clinched the white Best Young Rider’s jersey as the Vuelta Espana came to a close in Granada.



The 23-year old battled hard across the 21 stages to finish sixth overall, overcoming crashes and illness to put together a consistent performance in his first Grand Tour for Netcompany INEOS.



Sixth place marks a second top-10 finish in his first four career Grand Tours for Onley, who wore the white jersey continously after picking it up on the fourth stage.



The Scot received committed support from his team-mates across the race, with Embret Svestad-Bardseng (20th overall) and Jack Haig (24th overall) providing strong riding in the mountains. Axel Laurance impressed with his climbing, while Lucas Hamilton and Carlos Rodriguez also worked tirelessly to help Onley. Josh Tarling finished a close third on an emotional opening time trial in Monaco before departing the race, while Ben Turner picked up a top-five finish on stage eight.

A demanding finishing circuit saw the race stretched on numerous occasions, with Laurance forcing his way into a front group of nine riders with three laps to go. Numerous attacks saw the Frenchman pushing all the way to the finish, scoring a hard-fought eventual eighth place.
