Stage one of the Tour of Poland ended with a fast and frantic bunch sprint, with Axel Laurance and Sam Welsford both finishing in the front group.
The flat 233km started aggressively from the outset, with Artem Shmidt active near the front as attacks flew from the flag.
A breakaway of six riders established an early advantage, but the peloton gradually brought the move under control. The group was reduced to three riders before the final escapees were caught inside the last 16km.
Dries De Bondt (Jayco AlUla) launched a late solo attack and briefly looked to have a chance of staying clear, but he was reeled in with 5km remaining as the sprint teams took control.
Michal Kwiatkowski was well positioned heading into the final two kilometres, with Axel Laurance and Sam Welsford on his wheel. Both Laurance and Welsford came home safely in the front group after a fast and frantic bunch sprint brought the opening stage to a close, with Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek) taking the win.
